After two months of intensive training, brainstorming, and creative content production, the first edition of Influencers Academy Moldova – Laughing in the Face of Disinformation concluded with a public finale on May 20. The initiative, led by the School of Journalism of Moldova in partnership with the Institute for War & Peace Reporting (IWPR) and supported by the Government of Norway, aimed to equip young content creators with the skills and strategies to challenge disinformation through short, impactful, and humorous videos.
From over 30 initial participants, 20 were selected for the full course, and 10 made it to the finals. The Academy offered hands-on experience in video storytelling, ethical journalism, and viral content design.
Three standout finalists received grants of €2,000 each to further develop their online content dedicated to countering disinformation.
“I never expected to win. I’ve never won a contest before. This award is a commitment to keep fighting disinformation. Thank you to the School of Journalism for such inspiring mentors,” said Sanda Boiarinova.
“I used to hide behind the camera, even wore a patch to hide my eye. Now I’ve stepped out with courage. This course pushed me beyond my limits,” shared Anastasia Suslov.
“The basics of journalism I studied at the University of Bălți really helped me – and so did 15 years in local press. I’m grateful for this experience,” said Ala Bugai.
Finalists were selected based on three key criteria: video quality, humor, and the clarity of the anti-disinformation message. The jury included media professionals, content creators, and project partners.
“All finalists are stars today. You addressed relevant and diverse topics with authenticity,” said Lara Moraru, IWPR Project Manager.
“What you say and how you say it matters. These videos show that well,” added Elisoa Cinthya, content creator and guest jury member.
“It’s inspiring to see such a wide range of voices and subjects. We need more initiatives like this one,” stated Ina Grejdeanu, Development Director at the Independent Journalism Center.
The course was led by a team of five expert instructors from journalism, content strategy, stand-up comedy, and fact-checking: Alexandru Ghețan, Nadine Gogu, Alexandru Gurdila, Cristina Mișcoi, and Petru Macovei.
Participants reported not only technical growth but personal breakthroughs:
Alina Antonov: “It was my first time recording a video. I broke the ice, became bolder, and now I want to keep going.”
Lorelei Grigorița: “I had vision, but no strategy. Now I’m building content that makes an impact. My page grew by 1,500 followers and reached over 600,000 people.”
Laura Rînja: “I work in communication, but this course helped me rethink how I engage online. I’m ready to do more.”
