Zîrnești, Cahul — June 16, 2025 — How do you recognize fake news? Why does misleading content spread so easily on social media? What are the risks of careless online shopping? These were the core questions at a training titled “How to stay informed and use social media safely, without spreading falsehoods,” organized by ICDC partners to strengthen media literacy in Moldova.

Citizens of all ages took part, eager to learn how to identify credible sources, understand the motives behind disinformation, and spot the tell-tale signs of manipulation and fraud. Journalist Lilia Zaharia led the session with practical guidance on the impact of disinformation and the risks linked to online commerce.

“It’s essential to check your sources and avoid sharing information that provokes strong emotions. Many viral messages aren’t verified. When shopping online, don’t use your salary or pension card—use a dedicated bank card with only enough funds for the purchase. And be wary of links received by SMS or WhatsApp—even if they claim to come from institutions like banks or courier services—they may be fake and used to steal personal data,” Zaharia explained.

Key topics covered

  • Techniques to verify credibility and spot fake or manipulative content
  • How emotional triggers fuel the spread of disinformation
  • Safer online purchases: avoiding risky links and dubious platforms
  • Verification methods: reverse image search, fact-checking sites, and cross-checking multiple independent sources

Mayor Nicolae Beju highlighted why this matters in rural areas, where access to reliable information and media education can be limited:

“Proper information protects us individually and collectively. We want a community where every citizen knows how to inform themselves properly and avoid digital manipulation and fraud.”

Participant feedback

Residents called the session clear, relevant, and immediately useful—especially for schools and public institutions:

  • “I now better understand the dangers hiding on social media and the importance of verifying before sharing.” – Vasile
  • “I didn’t realize how easily fake content spreads online. I’ll be more careful with sources and share what I learned with family.” – Vera
  • “Youth need this education most—they’re the most exposed. Schools should include this in their curriculum.” – Vasile, community mediator

Organized by ICDC partners, the training closed with a simple pledge from participants: to pass on what they learned to friends, family, and neighbors—building a more resilient community against digital risks and disinformation.
